ERNIE HARWELL JOINS THE CBS FAMILY
AND MOVES UP THE RADIO DIAL TO WWJ NEWSRADIO 95
SOUTHFIELD, Mich., Jan. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- WWJ Newsradio 95 announced veteran sportscasting legend Ernie Harwell will join the CBS Radio family. Harwell was the play-by-play announcer for the Detroit Tigers for 32 seasons. Harwell has agreed to a two-year contract to broadcast the Saturday "CBS Radio Baseball Game of the Week" beginning this April; those games are broadcast on WWJ Newsradio 95 in Detroit.
"We're delighted that Ernie's retirement is so brief," said CBS Vice President and WWJ General Manager Rod Zimmerman. "All of us at WWJ congratulate CBS for providing us the opportunity to bring Ernie's broadcasting talents back to Detroit airwaves."
Harwell is indeed a legend in baseball. He was enshrined by the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y., and awarded the Ford Frick award in the early 1980s. He is a 40-year veteran of professional baseball play-by-play, having worked at the local and regional level as well as previous occasional network experience. His voice is familiar to WWJ listeners who will remember Harwell's descriptions of baseball playoff games during the 1970s and 1980s. Locally, his credentials include broadcasting the 1968 and 1984 World Series during his 32 years covering Tiger baseball.
