ERIE, PA., HOSPITAL ANNOUNCES MAJOR CHARGE REDUCTIONS

ERIE, PA., HOSPITAL ANNOUNCES MAJOR CHARGE REDUCTIONS
/ADVANCE/ ERIE, Pa., Jan. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Counter to the trend

of rising hospital charges, a major northwestern Pennsylvania hospital today announced significant charge reductions.
Saint Vincent Health Center, a 584-bed regional referral center in Erie, has reduced charges for certain heart procedures, resulting in savings to patients and payors of approximately three percent or $5 million.
According to Bob Cox, Saint Vincent chief financial officer, the charge reductions were made possible by the effectiveness of several recently-implemented cost control programs, as well as higher-than- expected state reimbursement for Medicaid patients in 1991.
Cox said that these charge reductions, the first in the hospital's 116-year history, should not be a one-time deal. "Saint Vincent will be taking every opportunity to cut costs now and in the future, and to pass these savings on to patients," he stressed.
