ERC EXPERIENCES TECHNICAL DIFFICULTY WITH FUEL CELL TEST AFTER 250 HOURS OF OPERATION; SECOND TEST PLANNED FOR AUGUST

DANBURY, Conn., April 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Energy Research Corporation (NASDAQ: ERCC, BSE: ERC) announced today that after 250 hours of successful start-up and operation, 1 out of 40 cell groups experienced technical difficulties in the first test of a commercial-scale fuel cell stack at its Danbury, Conn. facility. As a result, the system could not continue to operate at rated power, requiring a discontinuation of the test. ERC engineers are evaluating data in order to identify the cause. All balance-of-plant and support systems performed well during the test period. ERC plans to complete assembly and commence testing of a second stack in August 1993.
This was the first test of the company's commercial scale (120 kilowatt) Direct Fuel Cell stack and balance-of-plant facility in which it is installed. This will cause a delay in the proposed two-megawatt demonstration power plant project in California, currently in the final stages of negotiation. Commercialization of the technology is targeted for 1998.
Energy Research Corporation, located in Danbury and Torrington, Conn., is engaged in the commercialization of highly efficient and environmentally benign electric power generation equipment for utilities using its Direct Fuel Cell technology, and in the development of advanced storage batteries.
