EQUIFAX CHECK SERVICES REPORTS ON CHECK WRITING ACTIVITY

TAMPA, Fla., May 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Equifax Check Services Division, Telecredit, announced that, based on its monthly sample of consumer check activity in more than 100 of the nation's largest retail chains, consumers spent 2.1 percent less via personal check during April 1993 than they did during April 1992.
While this year's number for April is down from last year's, it represents a 50 percent increase from last month. The analysis of check volume data is part of an ongoing research project to develop an index.
 The Results By Region Are:
-- Eight (8) State Northeast Region -- was up 2.1 percent
-- Ten (10) State Midwestern Region -- was up .3 percent
-- Ten (10) State Mountain Region -- was down 5.9 percent
-- Five (5) State Western Region -- was down 10.6 percent
-- Seventeen (17) State Southern Region -- was up .6 percent (NOTE: Numbers are available by individual state upon request.)
Florida was one of the few states that represented a gain, up 11.7 percent. California represented the largest decline, down 11.8 percent. Texas reported a decline of 7.7 percent while Ohio and Illinois had gains of about 3 percent.
The overall 2 percent decline in U.S. comparable check sales is consistent with the Conference Board's April 1993 Consumer Confidence Survey findings that state: "The economic indicators continue to be mixed. While the number of jobs has been growing, the increase is still too slight to make any change in the level of unemployment. Recent retail sales have been disappointing but this may be the result of bad weather." Despite the decrease in unemployment, retail spending is still down.
Equifax Check Services is the largest check authorization company in the United States providing services to more than 100,000 retail points of sale. In 1992, Equifax Check Services authorized more than $11 billion. Revenues for 1992 were $117 million.
