EPILOGUE INTRODUCES NEXT GENERATION OF NETWORK MANAGEMENT WITH SNMPV2 SUPPORT

WASHINGTON, March 8 /PRNewswire/ -- At a press conference entitled "SNMPv2: The Next Generation" Wednesday, March 10, 2:00 p.m., at INTEROP 93 Spring, Epilogue Technology Corporation will announce that it will upgrade its entire family of SNMP-based products to support SNMP Version 2 in April. Epilogue executives said they expect to release SNMPv2 when the IETF grants approval as an RFC standard within weeks, and the majority of the Epilogue's OEM customers are expected to implement SNMPv2 before year end.
"It's important to understand that the pending SNMPv2 technology marks an evolution, not a revolution in network management," explained David Preston, vice president and general manager of Epilogue. "SNMP Version 2 really brings extensions and improvements to the existing protocol, adding new MIBs, PDUs, and Object Types. Once the IETF resolves the security issues, SNMP will be the only solution of its kind for dealing with network management issues in a secure, spoof-proof manner."
Parts of the emerging SNMPv2 standard have already solidified. A new GetBulk PDU has been added to facilitate retrieval of large blocks of data, such as tables. GetBulk makes it possible to bundle a series of GetNext requests into a single request/response operation. An InformRequest PDU has also been added, and a new Trap PDU.
Several new MIBs have also been added to SNMPv2 to support manager- to-manager communication, opening new possibilities for hierarchical management structures. MIB semantics have also been clarified so MIB I and MIB II extensions can be given parameters and object associations so they can be recognized by a single MIB browser. Managers can also be configured to view parts of a MIB instead of just the whole MIB.
"In proposing SNMPv2, the IETF was adamant that the new standard should be designed to supplement rather than replace the existing SNMP standard and we plan to offer the same extensibility," said Preston. "Our customers have made a big investment in developing products that utilize our current SNMP technology, and we are committed to making our SNMPv2 products as portable as possible. We will license a single set of source code that can be configured to conform to SNMPv1 or SNMPv2, or both. Where possible, SNMPv1 and SNMPv2 will share common data structures."
Epilogue's initial SNMPv2 release deliver an upgraded SNMP engine. OEM customers may initially choose to write additional routines to implement the SNMPv2 engine, but these routines will later be supported in a routine library by the Epilogue MIB compiler. None of the existing method routines should have to be changed. Initial beta testing of the software has already begun.
Envoy SNMP licensing is available for $25,000 and Emissary MIB compiler licensing is $5,000.
