EPE TECHNOLOGIES, SQUARE D TO COMBINE POWER PROTECTION SYSTEMS OPERATIONS

 EPE TECHNOLOGIES, SQUARE D
TO COMBINE POWER PROTECTION SYSTEMS OPERATIONS
COSTA MESA, Calif., Feb. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Groupe Schneider's North American power protection systems business announced today that it will unify manufacturing, sales and administration in Costa Mesa, for its full range of EPE Technologies and Square D-Topaz uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), power line conditioners and isolation transformers.
The Topaz single-phase UPS and power line conditioning equipment will complement the three-phase UPS and power distribution systems that are produced at the EPE Technologies facility in Costa Mesa.
Operations at the Topaz facility in San Diego will be phased out by the end of 1992. Topaz was purchased by Square D in 1983 and became part of Groupe Schneider of France through the merger of Square D with Groupe Schneider last year. In 1990, Square D and Groupe Schneider had combined sales of approximately $11 billion.
This action will further strengthen the Groupe Schneider power protection systems business in North America. EPE Technologies is a wholly owned U.S. subsidiary of Merlin Gerin, a key member of Groupe Schneider, the global leader in electrical distribution and industrial control products, systems and services. Together, Merlin Gerin and EPE Technologies comprise the world's largest supplier of UPS systems.
"There are a number of important business advantages to the EPE Technologies and Topaz combination," said Larry Young, president and chief executive officer of EPE Technologies. "We will gain significant manufacturing, marketing and product development efficiencies in a highly competitive industry.
"The two product families address different market segments and complement each other, so that we can offer customers a single source for a full range of power protection systems products.
"Our business will continue to benefit from the research, design and technical strengths of both Merlin Gerin and Square D. Merlin Gerin and EPE Technologies form a worldwide organization for power protection technology and product development," said Young.
The combination will broaden sales and distribution opportunities for both product lines. The EPE Technologies sales force will also sell Topaz products, and some Topaz distributors will be offered the opportunity to represent EPE Technologies.
Approximately 150 employees at the Topaz facility in San Diego were informed today that operations will be discontinued by the end of 1992. The displaced employees will be provided with severance benefits, outplacement and continuation of benefits.
