EPA TO HOLD PUBLIC MEETING ON APRIL 16 IN OXFORD, N.C.,
REGARDING THE JFD/CHANNEL MASTER SUPERFUND SITE
ATLANTA, April 14 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will hold a public meeting on Thursday, April 16, regarding the Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study findings that determined the extent of contamination and possible cleanup alternatives for the JFD/Channel Master Superfund site in Oxford, N.C.
The meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the U.S. Department of Agriculture Crops Research Laboratory Conference Room, Industry Drive and Hillsboro Extension, in Oxford. Officials from EPA will discuss results of the investigation at the site, the various alternative methods of treating contamination and the agency's preferred alternative, an overview of the Superfund program and the opportunities for community involvement in EPA's selection of a cleanup remedy for the site. A 30-day public comment period on the study began on April 9 and will end on May 8. All interested individuals are invited to attend.
The site, located at the corner of Industrial Drive and Pine Tree Road, occupies approximately 13 acres. From 1962 to 1979, JFD Electronics manufactured television antennas at the facility. From 1980 to 1984, Channel Master Satellite Systems, Inc., a subsidiary of Avnet, Inc. (NYSE: AVT), occupied the property, manufacturing indoor and outdoor antennas, amplifiers and boosters. Groundwater at the site is contaminated with organic solvents and soil is contaminated with metals. The site was placed on EPA's National Priorities List of hazardous waste sites in October 1989.
Documents concerning the JFD/Channel Master site are available for review at the Richard H. Thornton Public Library in Oxford.
