EPA TO HOLD PUBLIC MEETING IN MORRISVILLE, N.C., ON JULY 23
REGARDING THE KOPPERS COMPANY SUPERFUND SITE
ATLANTA, July 21 /PRNewswire/ -- The United States Environmental Protection Agency will hold a public meeting on Thursday, July 23, in Morrisville, N.C., regarding the proposed plan for addressing contamination at the Koppers Company, Inc. Superfund site.
The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at the Morrisville Elementary School, 1519 Morrisville Parkway. EPA will discuss the various alternative methods for treating contamination in the groundwater and remediation of on-site soils, and will present the agency's proposed plan for cleanup. All interested individuals are invited to attend.
The site occupies approximately 52 acres located on Highway 54 and Koppers Road in an industrial and residential area in Morrisville. The Koppers Company, Inc. operated the site beginning in 1959 as a wood preserving treatment facility. The site was purchased by Beazer, Inc. in 1988. The major contaminants of concern are pentachlorophenol (PCP) and dioxin. Contaminants which created an immediate health threat were removed by Koppers from a lagoon area in 1980 and 1986. The site was added to EPA's National Priorities List of hazardous waste sites in March 1989.
Documents pertaining to the site are available for review in the information repository located in the Wake County Public Library, 310 South Academy Street, Cary, N.C. The public comment period on the proposed plan began on July 17 and will end on Aug. 17.
