EPA TO HOLD PUBLIC MEETING IN HAZELWOOD, N.C., ON APRIL 21
REGARDING THE BENFIELD INDUSTRIES SUPERFUND SITE
ATLANTA, April 17 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will hold a public meeting on Tuesday, April 21, regarding the Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study findings that determined the amount of contamination and possible cleanup alternatives for the Benfield Industries Superfund site in Hazelwood, N.C.
The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at the Hazelwood Town Hall, 121 W. Georgia Ave., in Hazelwood. Officials from EPA will discuss the various alternative methods of treating contamination at the site and the agency's preferred alternative, an overview of the Superfund program, and the opportunities for community involvement in EPA's selection of a cleanup remedy. All interested individuals are invited to attend. A 30-day public comment period on the study began on April 13 and will end on May 12.
The property, located on Richland Street in the city of Hazelwood, occupies approximately six acres. Contamination of the property involves 3.5 acres. From 1904-76, Unagusta Furniture Company owned and operated a facility on the property which produced mattresses and lumber. The property was then purchased by Benfield Industries in 1976 and was an active facility until April 1982, when the entire operation was destroyed by fire. Benfield Industries mixed and packaged bulk materials such as paint thinners, solvents, sealants, cleaners, de-icing solutions and wood preservatives, including creosote, for resale. Organic and inorganic compounds are present in the soil and groundwater at the site. The site was placed on EPA's National Priorities List of hazardous waste sites in October 1989.
Documents concerning the Benfield Industries Superfund site are available for review at the Hazelwood Town Hall.
