EPA TO HOLD PRESS BRIEFING ON FRIDAY, SEPT. 11, REGARDING FINAL PHASE OF INTERIM CLEANUP AT FCX, INC. SUPERFUND SITE IN WASHINGTON, N.C.
ATLANTA, Sept. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will hold a press briefing on Friday, Sept. 11, at 1 p.m at the FCX, Inc. Superfund site in Washington, N.C., to provide information concerning the final phase of interim cleanup.
EPA officials will provide information about the cleanup activities and answer questions regarding the site.
The final interim cleanup will include excavation, backfilling with clean soil, and confirmatory sampling. Approximately 8,000 cubic yards of contaminated soil will be stored in nylon bags in a warehouse at the site. The selection and implementation of treatment will occur later. The interim cleanup is being conducted to remove any immediate threat posed by the presence of contaminated soil.
The FCX, Inc. Superfund site, located near the intersection of Grimes Road and Whispering Pine Road in Washington, Beaufort County, N.C., occupies approximately 12 acres. From 1945 through 1985, FCX, Inc. repackaged and distributed agricultural chemicals. In the early 1970s, a large trench on the property was filled with pesticide wastes and other agricultural chemicals. Sample analyses indicate that the soil and groundwater contain pesticides, such as DDT and chlordane, as well as toxaphene. The site was placed on EPA's National Priorities List of hazardous waste sites in March 1989.
