EPA TO CONDUCT CHEMICAL SAFETY AUDITS AT AMMONIA STORAGE FACILITIES IN TAMPA, HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FLA.

ATLANTA, Jan. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- The Chemical Accident Prevention Program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will conduct chemical safety audits at three ammonia storage facilities in Hillsborough County, Fla., during the week of Feb. 20.
The audits are expected to be completed within one week.
The companies, Seminole Fertilizer Corporation; IMC Fertilizer, Inc.; and CF Industries, Inc., in general, receive liquified ammonia from barges, place it in storage facilities, then transfer it to other sites for use in the manufacture of fertilizer. Although the facilities have not experienced any accidental releases to the environment, the amount in storage -- more than 100 million pounds -- is sufficient to warrant the audits. Ammonia is listed by EPA as a hazardous and toxic chemical.
During the audit, EPA will evaluate the companies' accident prevention and mitigation equipment, procedures and planning for accidents and releases, should they occur.
EPA will prepare technical reports describing the audits, including findings and recommendations. The reports are expected to be completed within four to six weeks. Copies of the audit reports will be made available to the public upon completion. Persons interested in obtaining a copy of the reports should contact Charles Cartwright, U.S. EPA Region IV, 345 Courtland, St. N.E., Atlanta, GA 30365.
