EPA TO CONDUCT CHEMICAL SAFETY AUDITAT ALBRIGHT AND WILSON AMERICAS IN CHARLESTON, S.C.

ATLANTA, Nov. 27 ~PRNewswire~ -- The Chemical Accident Prevention Program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will conduct a chemical safety audit at Albright and Wilson Americas in Charleston, S.C. during the week of Nov. 30.
The audit is expected to be completed within one week.
Chemical safety audits are part of the agency's Chemical Emergency Preparedness and Prevention Program. EPA, with assistance from state and local agencies, conducts chemical safety audits routinely and in response to accidental releases at various facilities throughout the region.
During the audit, EPA will examine the facility's chemical processes and equipment; its maintenance, operating, storage, training, and safety procedures; and management's commitment to chemical accident prevention and safety. Also, EPA will review the facility's contingency planning and dispersion modeling for accidental releases, should they occur.
Albright and Wilson Americas and similar facilities which use regulated chemicals are required to notify federal and~or state and local officials of accidental releases of hazardous substances in amounts in excess of established minimum quantities. In addition, these facilities must report annually to state and local officials on the types and amounts of hazardous substances on-site in quantities above established threshold levels. Also, they may be required to report to EPA and to the state their annual emissions of certain toxic chemicals which enter the air, water, and land.
EPA will prepare a technical report describing the audit, including findings and recommendations. The report is expected to be completed within four to six weeks. Copies of the audit report will be made available to the public upon its completion. Persons interested in obtaining a copy of the report should contact Charles Cartwright, U.S. EPA Region IV, 345 Courtland St., N.E., Atlanta, GA 30365.
