EPA TO CONDUCT CHEMICAL SAFETY AUDIT AT VELSICOL CHEMICAL COMPANY IN CHATTANOOGA, TENN. ATLANTA, July 30 /PRNewswire/ -- The Chemical Accident Prevention Program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will conduct a chemical safety audit at Velsicol Chemical Company in Chattanooga, Tenn., during the week of Aug. 3. The audit is expected to be completed by the end of the week. Accidental releases of toluene, as well as permitted releases, occurred at the Velsicol facility. EPA will work with Velsicol to identify causes of the releases in order to determine how recurrences can be prevented. Chemical safety audits are part of the agency's Chemical Emergency Preparedness and Prevention Program. EPA, with assistance from state and local agencies, conducts chemical safety audits routinely and in response to accidental releases at various facilities throughout the region. During the audit, EPA will examine the facility's chemical processes and equipment; its maintenance, operating, storage, training, and safety procedures; and management's commitment to chemical accident prevention and safety. Also, EPA will review the facility's contingency planning and dispersion modeling for accidental releases, should they occur. EPA will prepare a technical report describing the audit, including findings and recommendations. The report will be available to the public in four to six weeks following completion of the audit.
