EPA TO CONDUCT CHEMICAL SAFETY AUDIT AT JONES CHEMICALS
 IN CHARLOTTE, N.C.
ATLANTA, July 17 /PRNewswire/ -- The Chemical Accident Prevention Program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will conduct a chemical safety audit at Jones Chemicals, Inc. in Charlotte, N.C., during the week of July 20.
The audit is expected to be completed within three days. Jones Chemicals, Inc. is a supplier of chlorine, bleach and other industrial chemicals.
EPA will coordinate the audit with the North Carolina Division of Emergency Management, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Emergency Management Office, the local emergency planning committee and the local fire department.
Chemical safety audits are part of the agency's Chemical Emergency Preparedness and Prevention Program. They are routinely conducted at various facilities throughout the eight southeastern states in EPA Region IV.
During the audit, EPA will examine the facility's chemical processes and equipment; its maintenance, operating, storage, training and safety procedures; and management's commitment to chemical accident prevention and safety. Also, EPA will review the facility's contingency planning and dispersion modeling for accidental releases, should they occur.
Jones Chemicals, Inc. and similar facilities which use regulated chemicals are required to notify federal and/or state and local officials of accidental releases of hazardous substances in amounts in excess of established minimum quantities. In addition, these facilities must report annually to state and local officials on the types and amounts of hazardous substances on-site in quantities above established threshold levels. Also, they may be required to report to EPA and to the state their annual emissions of certain toxic chemicals which enter the air, water and land.
EPA will prepare a technical report describing the audit, including findings and recommendations. The report is expected to be completed within four to six weeks. Copies of the audit report will be made available to the public upon its completion. Persons interested in obtaining a copy of the report should contact P.H. Steed, U.S. EPA Region IV, 345 Courtland St. N.E., Atlanta, GA 30365.
