EPA REACHES AGREEMENT WITH POTENTIALLY RESPONSIBLE PARTIES TO CLEAN UP CONTAMINATED SITE IN PLANT CITY, FLA. ATLANTA, May 5 /PRNewswire/ -- The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced today that the Federal District Court for the Middle District of Florida entered a Consent Decree on April 22 between EPA and Schuylkill Metals of Plant City, Inc., a Delaware corporation, and Arrow Electronics, Inc., a New York corporation, for the cleanup of the Schuylkill Metals Superfund Site in Plant City, Hillsborough County, Fla. Cleanup costs are estimated at $6 million. Pursuant to the decree, Schuylkill and Arrow agreed to pay EPA $341,885.14 for costs incurred by the agency prior to Sept. 30, 1990, and to pay all future costs incurred by EPA at the site. The agreement also provides for the execution of a conservation easement involving wetlands located at the site to ensure that they remain undisturbed. The cleanup will implement a remedy selected by EPA in the Record of Decision issued by the agency on Sept. 28, 1990. The selected remedy includes excavation and separation of contaminated soils and debris, chemical fixation of soils and sediments, groundwater extraction and treatment, fencing and inundation of wetlands located at the site, biological monitoring of the wetlands and mitigation for the loss of their functional value, a conservation easement, and operation and maintenance. All design and construction activities will be conducted under federal and state oversight. Upon approval by EPA, the design documents for this project will be placed in the information repository located at the Plant City Public Library, 501 N. Wheeler St., Plant City, Fla., and at the EPA Records Center, 345 Courtland St., Atlanta, Ga. EPA will continue to keep the public informed of remedial activities at the site. -0- 5/5/92 /CONTACT: Rose Jackson, community relations coordinator, 404-347-2643, or Charlis Thompson, 404-347-3004, both of the United States Environmental Protection Agency/ CO: United States Environmental Protection Agency; Schuylkill Metals of Plant City, Inc.; Arrow Electronics, Inc.
