EPA AWARDS MCI GLOBAL TELECOMMUNICATIONS CONTRACT
WASHINGTON, Nov. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- The Environmental Protection

Agency (EPA) has awarded MCI Communications Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: MCIC) a five year contract valued at $7 million to provide telecommunications services between EPA domestic and international locations.
Under the terms of the agreement, MCI will provide the agency with a variety of voice and data communication services such as Vnet, a virtual private network service; virtual private data services (VPDS); packet switching; local area networks (LANS) and MCI Mail to assist the EPA in gathering, analyzing and disseminating information pertaining to global environmental issues.
"Telecommunications will play a critical role in the EPA's efforts to more effectively resolve problems with our environment as we approach the 21st century," said Jerry Edgerton, MCI's vice president of government systems. "The services we are providing the EPA will meet its current communication requirements and position the agency to address the growing worldwide environmental problems that impact the U.S. and other nations."
MCI's electronic mail service will be used by EPA employees travelling overseas to communicate with their offices and access data bases at the National Data Processing Division in Research Triangle Park in North Carolina. The division is the EPA's primary location for coordinating global communications.
The EPA consists of over 17,500 employees and over 30,000 contractors. It supports over 200 state agencies and 10 regional offices located across the continental United States, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and Alaska.
MCI, the nation's second largest long distance company, reported 1991 revenue of almost $10 billion. It provides a wide range of domestic and international voice, data and messaging services to business, government and residential users.
