EPA AWARDS $104,229 TO GEORGIA FOR WATER QUALITY AND WETLANDS PROTECTION
ATLANTA, July 2 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced today that federal funds totaling $104,229 have been awarded to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and the Department of Community Affairs (DCA).
The funds will be used to help protect water quality and wetlands in Georgia.
 W. Ray Cunningham, EPA Region IV Water Management Division director, said: "EPA is pleased to issue, for the first time, a State Wetlands Grant award to the state of Georgia. Georgia's wetlands protection project is a good example of using innovative technology to better manage the state's valuable wetlands resources."
"This grant provides the Department of Natural Resources and the Department of Community Affairs with an excellent opportunity to work together to protect our state's water quality and wetlands," said Georgia DNR Commissioner Joe D. Tanner. "We are looking forward to moving ahead with this program," said Tanner.
DNR will use money from the grant to test satellite-based landcover maps which were developed during the past two years. DNR hopes to refine its wetlands information and make it easier for individuals to interpret the data on selected watersheds around the state. Also, DNR will assist DCA with technical presentations to planners and developers on how to effectively use the new wetlands information.
The DCA will conduct a series of workshops for local officials and planners on the importance of wetlands protection, the identification of wetlands resources, and options for implementing protection measures locally. Additionally, DCA will develop and distribute model ordinances to help local governments implement wetlands protection measures and will educate land owners and developers about the value of protecting Georgia's wetlands and watershed resources.
The money was awarded through EPA's State Wetlands Protection Development Grant Program. In 1990, Congress appropriated funds to establish a grant program specifically aimed at supporting state wetlands protection programs, the development of new state wetlands protection programs or the refinement and enhancement of existing state wetlands programs. This grant program provides financial support to states and Indian tribes to develop or improve their ability to protect wetlands.
