EPA ASKS THE PUBLIC TO JOIN EFFORT TO 'HELP THE HARBOR!'

NEW YORK, Sept. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Harbor Estuary Program has scheduled a series of eight meetings in various locations in New York and New Jersey, called "Help the Harbor!" These meetings, over the next two months, are co-sponsored by numerous environmental and local organizations, and are designed to elicit public comments on the Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan for the NY/NJ Harbor.
The plan is being developed by an advisory committee made up of representatives from federal, state and local interests. It draws on five years of studies of pollution and overuse of resources in the NY/NJ Harbor Estuary. It is designed to be an overall blueprint for returning the estuary ecosystem to a healthy, productive status with a full range of beneficial uses.
"I encourage people to attend and participate in these meetings and join our effort to 'help the harbor'," said William J. Muszynski, acting EPA Region 2 administrator. "The Harbor Estuary Program is one that I am personally very proud of because it brings together interests that are normally seen as being at odds to work on a common solution to our pollution problems."
The first meeting will be in Freeport, N.Y., on Oct. 5 at Guy Lombardo Marina, 898 Guy Lombardo Ave. The first meeting is co-sponsored by SPLASH (Stop Polluting and Littering and Save Harbors) and Friends of the Bay. The next meetings are at Sandy Hook, N.J., Oct. 6; Lyndhurst, N.J., Oct. 7; Liberty State Park, N.J., Oct. 13; Hoboken, N.J., Oct. 14; Brooklyn, N.Y., Oct. 27; the Bronx, N.Y., Nov. 8; and New York City, Nov. 22.
