EPA APPROVES CROP GENETICS' BIOINSECTICIDE; SPOD-X(TM) IS FIRST NEW INSECT VIRUS APPROVED IN 10 YEARS

COLUMBIA, Md., May 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Crop Genetics International (NASDAQ: CROP) announced today that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved its Spod-X(TM) bioinsecticide, as an active ingredient for future commercial crop protection products. It is the first virus-based product to be approved by the EPA in the last years. Spod-X is a naturally-occurring insect virus which controls Spodeptera exiqua, commonly known as the beet armyworm, a major insect pest on tomatoes, lettuce, cole crops, flowers and ornamanetal plants.
Insect viruses occur naturally in the environment and are very specific in their ability to infect certain insects. They present no known threat to crops, wildlife, humans or non-target insects.
"Spod-X is the first of a series of insecticidal virus products to be manufactured by our InStar(TM) division," said James Davis, Ph.D., who heads research and development at Crop Genetics. Dr. Davis said Crop Genetics has two other insecticidal virus products awaiting EPA registration. He added that Spod-X and Crop Genetics' other virus-based products would be primarily field tested and marketed through a strategic alliance with DuPont Agricultural
Products. Dr. Davis said smaller bioinsecticide markets would be managed directly by the company. The first sales of Spod-X are anticipated next year.
Faith Zwick, Ph.D., project manager for IVPs at DuPont, reports that, "In field trials the biologically derived Spod-X has demonstrated outstanding control of army beetworms. We believe Spod-X will be a valuable tool for Integrated Pest Management programs, particularly in those areas where beet armyworms have developed some resistance to crop protection chemicals."
DuPont is providing funding to Crop Genetics for the development of production and purification methods that permit large scale manufacture of insecticidal products at competitive prices. Additionally, DuPont's product development groups are applying their expertise in field testing, formulation and market development around the world for Spod-X and other IVPs.
EPA's registration is a conditional registration and is effective immediately but requires Crop Genetics to complete one additional study during the next year.
Crop Genetics International develops biological crop protection systems to control insects, weeds and other agricultural pests. The company's research is focused on the creation of unique pesticides that are both effective for food production and compatible with the environment.
DuPont is a diversified chemicals, energy and specialty products company. DuPont markets agricultural products in 125 countries, has production facilities on five continents and is one of the largest suppliers of crop protection products in the U.S., offering more than 60 insecticides, fungicides and herbicides.
