EP READY TO THROW DOWN GAUNTLET.
During a meeting of the College of Commissioners, on 25 April, European Parliament President Martin Schulz said his institution is ready to throw down the gauntlet to all member states that call for cuts in the EU's long-term budget. After the meeting, EU executive chief Jose Manuel Barroso, who invited his EP counterpart, chose to underline the "special partnership" between their two institutions.
Highlighting the need for the EU to invest in the future, Schulz said "the European Parliament will not accept irresponsible orgies of axe-wielding against the [2014-2020] MFF [multiannual financial framework]" He warned that the Parliament would enter into negotiations with member states "well prepared" and make full use of its prerogatives, ie the EP's right of assent in the MFF procedure and co-decision powers in relation to the legislative proposals. "We are throwing down the gauntlet to all those who wish to implement cuts that will destroy Europe," the EP president told the commissioners.
Barroso chose to emphasise the "special partnership" between Parliament and Commission and their defense of the Community method. "It is important what we do in Europe but it is also important how we do it, so that we do it in a fair way where all are respected, big or small, rich or not so rich, new or old member states," said the Commission president.
