EOA 2008: towards the finishing line: the Olympics may have finished and the medals have all been won; but, for a different set of competitors, those involved in the 2008 European Outsourcing Awards, the competition is very much alive. The front runners are entering the home straight and the pace is fast and furious.
No information about the winning companies is divulged before the night, but the judging process is well under way. The volume and quality of the nominations increases every year ... with 2008 being no exception. The experts on our judging panel have been kept extremely busy and some of the submissions have been difficult to separate in terms of excellence and value. One judge said: "The competition between Company A and Company B is head to head! The reason that I have selected Company A as the winner is the real innovative value and the significance for the customer." Another nomination generated the feedback: "Company X has clearly demonstrated customer focus and worked closely with them to optimize the product. Patients will potentially benefit from this type of formulation; it is a very patient-friendly approach."
Quality and Quantity
The diversity of submissions, in terms of geography and application, has been very impressive, with nominations coming mainly from Europe, but also from the US, India and China. Covering topics as wide-ranging as infusion pumps for clinical studies, logistics management and granulating equipment, the EOA has certainly inspired some creative thinking and will highlight many novel and innovative relationships in the outsourcing sector. Indeed, innovation seems to be the name of the game! The Most Innovative Relationship category has generated first-class entries, with companies such as Catalent, HCL, Burgopack and Satellite, among others, battling for the award. In addition, the Best Manufacturing Project has also turned out to be a popular category: Fine Foods, Patheon, Penn Pharmaceuticals and Bilcare, to name a few, are all worthy contenders for this award, with the final results yet to be collated. Via Media is delighted that the newer categories--nutraceuticals and supply chain--is also of interest to the life science industries ... and beyond. With submissions coming from Colorcon, Custom Pharmaceuticals and Lipid Nutrition, and Kuhne + Nagel, Pharmaflow and NYK Logistics, respectively, the breadth of the outsourcing industry and the crossover into other sectors and disciplines becomes very apparent. It's not just about manufacturing drugs any more.
Of course, the EOA is not an individual event; it's about relationships and working together. So, beyond the nominating companies themselves, the other parties play a significant role in bringing the nominations to completion and agreeing to participate. With that in mind, we are looking forward to welcoming representatives from Procter and Gamble, AstraZeneca, Pfizer, GlaxoSmithKline, Ranbaxy and many other organizations on the night--and celebrating with them as the results are announced.
We must extend our sincere thanks to all the companies who have taken time to compile and submit their nominations. We realize that this is not a simple undertaking and your continued support is absolutely essential to the growth and development of the event. It is extremely satisfying to see so many new companies taking part, as well as some previous candidates, such as ClinPhone, Pierre Fabre and SRG. We wish you all the very best of luck in the closing stages and extend our gratitude to our sponsors--Aptuit and Pfizer--and event partners, particularly SFSTP, PharmSource, BCMPA and ICSE. In closing last year, Makarand Jawadekar, Director, AMP, part of the Worldwide Clinical Development Operations group within Pfizer Global R&D emphasized the driving force behind the event and reminded the audience what the true role of the pharmaceutical industry is. He said: "The European Outsourcing Awards is an important event for the entire pharmaceutical industry, irrespective of whether you are a big, medium or small player. In these days of market globalization, we should never forget that the patient is our ultimate customer, and the person who we should keep foremost in our thoughts." It would seem that the companies that have submitted their entries for this year's event have very much taken this message to heart and raised the bar in terms of quality of application. The very best of outsourcing and contract service relationships will be announced in Frankfurt on the 1st of October. I sincerely hope that you'll be able to join us and not only toast the winners, but also improve your own business relationships.
