ENVOY EXPERT; TOURISTS IN TERROR BLAST.

THE British ambassador to Turkey Sir Peter Wesmacott has a long and tragic experience of terrorism.

His cousin SAS Captain Herbert Westmacott, pictured below, was killed by the IRA in 1980. Captain Westmacott was posthumously awarded the Military Cross after being shot in North Belfast.

In 1995, while working in Washington, Sir Peter helped arrange the first meeting between Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams and Secretary of State Sir Patrick Mayhew.

He was also ambassador at the British Embassy in Istanbul when it was bombed by terrorists in November 2003.
