ENVIROTEST REPORTS SETTLEMENT OF STRIKE AT CANADIAN JOINT VENTURE; COMPANY ALSO AWARDED EXTENSION OF ITS QUALITY ASSURANCE CONTRACT

TUCSON, Ariz., July 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Envirotest Systems Corp. (NASDAQ-NMS:ENVI) today announced both the settlement of a strike at its Canadian joint venture, Ebco-Hamilton Partners, and its receipt of an award of a two-year extension of its Quality Assurance Contract in California by that State's Department of Consumer Affairs, Bureau of Automotive Repair. The extension, which runs through June 30, 1995, will account for approximately $3.4 million per year in revenue for Envirotest.
With respect to the strike settlement, Envirotest stated that employees at Ebco-Hamilton Partners are expected to begin returning to work tomorrow, having ratified terms of their first collective agreement, which is effective immediately, and which has a termination date of September 30, 1995. The wage rate increases under the new agreement will not have any material adverse effect on the operations of Envirotest. The strike had commenced on May 1, 1993. Ebco-Hamilton Partners operates the centralized emissions inspection program for Vancouver British Columbia.
Under the California Quality Assurance Contract, Envirotest is responsible primarily for monitoring the quality of the testing procedures and equipment used in the State's current decentralized emissions testing program. Envirotest has been involved in California's Quality Assurance Program since 1985.
Envirotest Systems Corp is the leading provider of centralized vehicle emissions testing programs for states and municipalities. In addition, Envirotest is the only domestic provider of contractor- operated centralized testing services outside the United States.
