ENVIRONMENTAL TESTING AND CERTIFICATION CORP., A WHOLLY-OWNED SUBSIDIARY OF APPLIED BIOSCIENCE, PURCHASES STAKE IN ENSYS ENVIRONMENTAL PRODUCTS

ARLINGTON, Va., Jan. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Grover C. Wrenn, president and chief executive officer of Applied Bioscience International Inc. (NASDAQ: APBI), announced today the purchase by its wholly owned subsidiary Environmental Testing and Certification Corporation ("ETC") of certain preferred stock of EnSys Environmental Products, Inc. (a private company) of Research Triangle Park, N.C. ETC and EnSys also have entered into a co-marketing and joint development agreement.
EnSys is the leader in utilizing biotechnology-based analytical systems for the detection of chemicals in environmental and other media. Specifically, EnSys has developed its products around monoclonal antibody immunoassay technology. While several approaches have been pursued to provide quick and inexpensive analysis for organic chemicals, immunoassay technology is the only method to have received EPA approval. Among immunoassay companies, EnSys develops and sells the only EPA- approved, on-site test kits for the detection of hazardous chemicals, such as PCBs and petroleum products.
ETC, which has been a leader in the development and provision of laboratory services to the environmental industry since its beginnings in 1981, sees the EnSys technology as meeting the demand for inexpensive, quick-response chemical detection capability in both field and laboratory settings. ETC and EnSys intend jointly to offer waste generators and environmental engineering firms access to a range of fast, cost-effective analytical services, including field test kits and rapid, lab-based analysis based on immunoassay methods.
APBI provides a broad range of inter-related services, including biological safety testing and clinical research and development through its Life Sciences Group, and assessment and management of chemical and environmental risk, agrochemical research and development, and related analytical chemistry services through its Environmental Sciences Group. These services are provided under contract to clients in the pharmaceutical, general chemical, agrochemical, and other industries worldwide.
