ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH FACILITY OPENS ITS DOORS

GAINESVILLE, Fla., Oct. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- The Florida Turfgrass Research Foundation committed to build a research laboratory, called the Envirotron, to provide solutions to save our precious natural resources. The 3,100-square-foot state-of-the-art research field laboratory designed to study and develop new technology on the relationship of turfgrass with all biological, environmental and cultural factors affecting turf is having its dedication on Nov. 19. The state of Florida now has the best teaching and extension facility for turfgrass research in the country on the campus of the University of Florida, Gainesville and the state's first Environmental Research Unit.
The Envirotron facility is equipped with student housing which will allow recruitment of top turf scholars, and scholarships will be provided through the Dr. G. C. Horn Endowment. The Envirotron will yield invaluable information regarding the benefits of turfgrass to the environment. Studying the impact of turfgrass on temperature modifications, noise abatements, pollution filtration and water purification, and aspects of turfgrass culture are the primary goals of this facility.
This facility has been in the works for over two years. It has received funding from the state of Florida Capital Facilities Trust along with $350,000 raised by the Florida Turfgrass Research Foundation, with contributions by the Florida Golf Course Superintendents Association and many other private organizations, clubs and individuals.
"Nov. 19th will truly be the beginning of a new era of scientific research for the Florida turf industry," says Bob Yount, the director of the Florida Turfgrass Association.
