ENVIROGEN DISCOVERS OZONE-DEPLETING CFC SUBSTITUTES BIODEGRADABLE

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J., Dec. 1 ~PRNewswire~ -- Envirogen, Inc. (NASDAQ: ENVG) announced the successful aerobic biodegradation of certain hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) and hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), according to results of a study performed in its scientific laboratories and reported in the December 1992 issue of the peer-reviewed journal, Bio~Technology.
HCFCs and HFCs are being phased in as alternatives to the ozone- depleting chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) by 1996.
The use of HCFCs and HFCs as CFC replacements will be tightly regulated since HCFCs are also ozone depleting, although at a substantially lower level than CFCs, and HFCs have been implicated as greenhouse gases. Until recently, all of these compounds have been considered non-biodegradable. According to Dr. Mary DeFlaun, lead scientist on the project, "The biodegradability of specific HCFCs and HFCs could result in these being chosen as the most environmentally acceptable CFC alternatives."
In the study, the microorganism was able to degrade three out of five HCFCs and one out of three HFCs tested. Envirogen said it has plans to further develop the technology for use both in emissions control at production and recycling facilities and in remediating potential soil and groundwater contamination.
Envirogen is an innovative environmental biotechnology company dedicated to the business of discovering, developing, and applying new and effective solutions to the task of degrading or transforming toxic and hazardous wastes. Through its subsidiary, Vapex Environmental Technologies, Inc., the company also designs and implements vapor extraction systems for the on-site removal of organic contaminants from soils and groundwater.
