Watch tots and pets

around holiday plants

The holiday season often comes with gifts of plants, most of which are harmless but some that can be dangerous to children or pets.

To be on the safe side, keep plants and arrangements out of reach of nibblers. If buying plants, ask if they're poisonous or look them up in a reference book. Pick up all leaves and other plant parts that fall off.

The Oregon Poison Control Center in Portland lists the following plants as poisonous: amaryllis, azalea, sand begonia, bird of paradise, Calla lily, carnation, Christmas cherry, daffodil (including paperwhite narcissus), dieffenbachia, English holly and ivy, geranium, horse chestnut, hyacinth, hydrangea, iris, jack-in-the-pulpit, Jerusalem cherry, juniper, larkspur, laurel, lily-of-the-valley, mistletoe, oxalis, philodendron, rhododendron, spathe flower, string of pearls, tulip and yew tree.

For a copy of the center's brochure, "A Guide to Plant Poisoning Prevention and Treatment," call (800) 222-1222.

For information, call the OSU/Lane County Extension Service at 682-4243.
