LCC teacher wins

'executive chef' status

The American Culinary Federation has named Clive Wanstall, chef instructor in Lane Community College's culinary arts program, a certified executive chef.

The certification goes to chefs who demonstrate "a well-recognized and accepted set of professional standards ... (and) knowledge and experience in the culinary arts."

The culinary federation also certified LCC food services coordinator Greg Winslow a year ago, and the college's culinary program has won accreditation from the group.

Wanstall has taught culinary arts at LCC since 1999, specializing in international cuisines such as classical French, Italian, Middle Eastern and Cantonese. Before that, he managed the Ambrosia Restaurant in Eugene for 13 years.

During his career, he has worked as chef saucier, chef poissonier, executive sous chef, catering chef, executive chef, chef de cuisine and general manager. He graduated from the Thanet Technical College's professional cookery program in Kent, England, in 1972.

Plant Sales

SATURDAY

Late Bloomers Garden Club - 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., next to the Leaburg Fire Station, about 22 miles east of Eugene on Highway 126. Hundreds of plants donated by club members; proceeds help with local beautification projects and the annual Goodpasture Bridge lighting festival each Christmas. 896-3033.

SUNDAY

Benefit Plant Sale - 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Alton Baker Park, Eugene. Water plants, old-fashioned perennials, trees, shrubs, hostas and more from 14 nurseries from all over the state, with emphasis on native plants. Proceeds benefit the Destination Imagination education program, a nationwide competition for teams of elementary and secondary students. 937-3073.
