ENTERGY ENTERPRISES AND FIRST PACIFIC NETWORKS ADD SOUTHERN COMPANY TO POWERVIEW(TM) DEVELOPMENT EFFORTS

LITTLE ROCK, Ark., Sept. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Entergy Enterprises, Inc., a unit of Entergy Corporation (NYSE: ETR), has entered into a letter of intent with First Pacific Networks (FPN) to expand the relationship currently shared with FPN.
The expanded relationship will include The Southern Company (NYSE: SO). The letter is subject to several conditions, including definitive documentation.
This letter of intent is an important step for PowerView(TM), said Entergy Enterprises President Jack King. Entergy Enterprises is pleased that Southern Company, after extensively examining FPN's technology and its applications in the electric utility industry, chose to become part of the continuing development of this existing technology.
PowerView (currently being developed by Entergy Enterprises and First Pacific Networks) is an electronic system that gives customers greater control over their electricity use and provides a constant communications link between utility companies and customers.
Southern Company released notice today it had reached accord with FPN on purchase of license and equipment from FPN. Entergy Enterprises will share in portions of these revenues from this license and equipment sale.
The PowerView(TM) device, connected to the utility through a fiber/coax cable network, will enable customers to automatically control energy use and shift electricity consumption away from peak-demand periods, when power is more expensive. Customers with PowerView(TM) can program appliances such as water heaters to use less energy during peak periods, reducing home utility bills and helping electric companies slow the growth of peak demands.
FPN has developed and is marketing a patented technology for telephone, data and energy management communications over hybrid fiber/coaxial cable networks.
