ENTERASYS NETWORKS JOINS 10 GIGABIT ETHERNET ALLIANCE.
"Joining the 10 GEA will significantly help Enterasys Networks in the development, promotion, and standardization of our upcoming 10 Gigabit Ethernet solutions," said John Roese, chief technology officer at Enterasys Networks. "Enterasys' membership in the 10 GEA demonstrates our commitment to 10 Gigabit Ethernet and reflects our continuing efforts to provide leading-edge solutions for the enterprise marketplace."
Founded in January 2000, the 10 GEA has grown to approximately 60 members, including 3Com, Cisco Systems, Extreme Networks, Intel, Nortel Networks, Sun Microsystems and World Wide Packets.
Joining the 10 GEA is yet another step in Enterasys Networks' efforts to integrate standards-based technologies into its Layer 2/3/4 switching solutions, including SmartSwitches, SmartSwitch Routers and the recently announced Matrix series of next-generation switches.
Positioned as a high-speed technology for networking applications in LANs, MANs and WANs, 10 Gigabit Ethernet will provide ultra-high bandwidth levels combined with simplicity and low cost. For LAN applications, 10 Gigabit Ethernet will enable network managers to scale their packet-based networks from 10 Megabits per second (Mbps) to 10,000 Mbps, leveraging their investments in Ethernet as they increase network performance. In MAN and WAN applications, 10 Gigabit Ethernet will enable Internet service providers (ISPs) and network service providers (NSPs) to create affordable, very high-speed links between co-located carrier-class switches, routers, servers and DWDM transport equipment. In addition, it may also provide connectivity between ISP point-of-presence (POP) locations.
About the 10 Gigabit Ethernet Alliance
The 10 Gigabit Ethernet Alliance was organized to facilitate and accelerate the introduction of 10 Gigabit Ethernet into the networking market. It was founded in January 2000 by networking industry leaders: 3Com, Cisco Systems, Extreme Networks, Intel, Nortel Networks, Sun Microsystems and World Wide Packets, and is now comprised of approximately 60 members. Additionally, the Alliance will support the activities of the IEEE 802.3 committee, foster the development of the 802.3ae (10 Gigabit Ethernet) standard and promote interoperability among 10 Gigabit Ethernet products.
