ENRON CORPORATION DEDICATES MTBE PLANT

HOUSTON, Dec. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Enron Corp. (NYSE: ENE) today celebrated the grand opening of its MTBE (methyl tertiary butyl ether) plant located at Morgan's Point, Texas. Construction was completed on Nov. 1 when the facility became fully operational.
MTBE, an oxygenate, is a component of reformulated (or cleaner burning) gasoline. The 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments have mandated the use of oxygenated fuel currently and reformulated gasoline as a vehicle motor fuel by Jan. 1995.
"As a leader in the natural gas industry and in keeping with our vision to provide clean energy worldwide, the dedication and operation of this plant makes perfect business and strategic sense," said Richard D. Kinder, president and chief operating officer of Enron Corp. "We believe that MTBE is the oxygenate of choice and will continue to play that role. With the increasing demand for a cleaner environment worldwide, there is no doubt that MTBE will have a global impact," he added.
Considered world-scale by industry standards, Enron's MTBE plant is the largest domestic facility of any type on Enron's system. It occupies a 43 acre site, with a production capacity of 15,000 barrels per day. The plant will receive isobutane and methanol, the two components of MTBE, from two other Enron facilities, an isomerization plant also located at Morgan's Point and the methanol plant located in Pasadena, Texas.
"From a supply and distribution standpoint, our MTBE plant is strategically located on the Gulf Coast to serve both the east and west coasts of the United States, since these areas have the largest gasoline markets," Kinder added. "It's also the most logical place from which to obtain feedstocks and to produce MTBE."
The plant was engineered, procured and constructed for Enron by The M.W. Kellogg Company, the international, technology-based engineering and construction arm of Dresser Industries, Inc.
Enron Corp., America's leading natural gas company with $10 billion in assets, operates one of the largest natural gas transmission systems totaling 43,000 miles worldwide; is the largest purchaser and marketer of long-term natural gas supplies in North America; markets natural gas liquids and MTBE worldwide; owns 80 percent of Enron Oil & Gas Company, one of the largest independent (non-integrated) natural gas exploration and production companies in the United States; and is one of the largest independent developers and producers of electricity in the United States and the United Kingdom, with extensive experience in combined heat and power installations. Enron Corp. is traded under the ticker symbol, ENE.
