ENRICO PESATORI JOINS DIGITAL EQUIPMENT CORPORATION TO HEAD PERSONAL COMPUTER BUSINESS UNIT

MAYNARD, Mass., Jan. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Digital Equipment Corporation (NYSE: DEC) today announced that Enrico Pesatori will join the company as vice president and general manager, Personal Computer Business Unit, effective February 1. The unit is one of nine new business units announced on December 22 by Digital President and Chief Executive Officer Robert B. Palmer.
Pesatori, 52, has served as president and chief executive officer, Zenith Data Systems (ZDS), for the past two years. Illinois-based ZDS, owned by Groupe Bull of France, is a leading worldwide supplier of notebook and desktop personal computers. He will report to Palmer, who took over as Digital's President and CEO last October 1.
"In our drive to return to profitable growth, we have intensified our customer focus," said Palmer. "The PC business will become a major area of emphasis. Enrico will play a prominent role, adding significant leadership to our efforts. Enrico's industry stature and broad experience bring the fresh approaches needed to meet the challenges ahead."
As vice president and general manager, Personal Computer Business Unit, Pesatori will be responsible for establishing Digital as a growing and profitable force in the worldwide PC market.
"We believe Digital can and will be among the top PC companies in the world," said Palmer. "In Enrico, we have a senior executive with the leadership capabilities, international experience, and proven record of achievement we need to succeed in the intensely competitive PC business."
Prior to joining Zenith Data Systems, Pesatori spent 21 years with Ing. C. Olivetti & Co. in a series of senior technical and management positions. His tenure at the Italian computer and electronics company included heading the Olivetti Systems Group, where he was responsible for research and development, manufacturing, and marketing of all data processing and microcomputer products. He also served as President and CEO of Olivetti North America.
A native of Turin, Italy, Pesatori holds a master's degree in Electronics Engineering from Polytechnic University in Turin, Italy. "What makes this challenge so exciting for me is the potential I see for Digital as a major player in the PC marketplace," said Pesatori. "Digital has the technology, the financial strength, and the worldwide infrastructure that this business requires. There is already momentum to build on."
Digital Equipment Corporation, headquartered in Maynard, Mass., is the leading worldwide supplier of networked computer systems, software and services.
