ENGLAND DUO PUT PAKISTAN IN TROUBLE; CRICKET.

STUART Broad and James Anderson destroyed Pakistan's top order with the new ball to reduce their opponents to 53 for seven at lunch on day one of the final Test.

Anderson had a wicket in the first over of the day and there was no let-up from him or Broad thereafter on a pitch of decent pace but which produced seam movement too after Misbah-ul-Haq had chosen to bat first at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

England, who began this dead rubber in danger of a 3-0 whitewash after back-to-back defeats, delivered a fierce payback for their previously sorry performances here.

Yet even as Pakistan threatened to fold for their lowest-ever total against them, there was an inevitable hollow note for the world number ones having waved goodbye to this series with their own hapless collapse to 72 all out in Abu Dhabi last week.

Anderson began with the wicket of Taufeeq Umar, for a five-ball duck, in the opening over.

England could have had their second success only two balls later, Broad (four for 21) finding Mohammad Hafeez's edge only for Andrew Strauss to merely parry a sharp head-high catch at slip.

The opener therefore survived on one, and Broad had to wait until more movement took a faint inside edge to account for Azhar Ali after a fine catch by Matt Prior.

Younus Khan then fenced at one from Broad, who then trapped Hafeez lbw, before Misbah went lbw at the other end.

Broad then dismissed Adnan Akmal with his 30th lbw dismissal of this series before Graeme Swann had Abdur Rehman hoisting a skier to Kevin Pietersen at mid-off.
