 ENGINEERS RESCUE 911
IRVINE, Calif., Sept. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- When 911 is in trouble,

who do they call? The local engineer, of course, in this case the largest engineering and construction company in the United States.
Hurricane Andrew hit New Iberia, a town of approximately 30,000, lying at the mouth of Bayou Teche in the heart of Louisiana's sugar cane belt, at approximately 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 25. Among the destruction was the loss of power at City Hall. With it went the communications command center for the state police, sheriff's department, fire department ... and 911.
Once battered city hall employees were able to get back to town, a top priority was connecting a power source to this vital focal point for emergency communications. Unfortunately, there was a problem with the hookup of a commandeered generator to the power box. Everything blew. Enter Fluor Daniel.
Fluor Daniel opened an office in New Iberia in December 1991 to build huge modules for a gas plant in Alaska. The morning of Friday, Aug. 28, the project manager got an SOS call from the mayor. He responded immediately.
As part of the community, Fluor Daniel employees wanted to do whatever they could to help. They'd already taken more than 4,000 bags of ice and chain saws to emergency evacuation centers, donated food, moved generators where needed, plus personnel, equipment and materials to help in the cleanup. So, when the mayor called Friday morning with such an urgent request, the project manager packed up 15 generators, three engineers, a supervisor and a craftworker, and headed to town.
They had the power back on and all services working by that same afternoon.
Fluor Daniel work crews will continue their volunteer efforts this weekend, delivering hundreds of bags of ice to neighboring communities. One delivery was made with a police escort because of the incredible demand for this precious commodity. They'll also be out helping the elderly and disabled clean up their yards.
In addition, Fluor Daniel has donated $25,000 to the National Red Cross designated for the Hurricane Andrew Disaster Relief Fund.
Fluor Daniel Inc, Fluor Corp.'s (NYSE: FLR) principal subsidiary, is an international engineering, construction, maintenance and technical services company with more than 50 offices around the world.
