 ENGELHARD INTRODUCES REFORMULATED FUEL CATALYSTS
 ISELIN, N.J., April 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Engelhard Corporation

announced today it has introduced the first commercially available catalysts for use in making reformulated gasoline. New IsoPlus(TM) catalysts boost production of oxygenate feedstocks from existing refinery equipment between 70 and 200 percent, and have the potential to save the U.S. refinery industry billions of dollars in capital investment.
The new catalysts resulted from the company's intensive two-year effort to develop products that will help oil companies meet the new Clean Air Act requirements for oxygenated and reformulated gasolines. Under the act, 41 U.S. cities with high levels of carbon monoxide must use gasoline containing oxygen during the winter starting in 1992.
In addition, the nine cities that suffer from severe ozone levels must use reformulated gasoline year-round starting in 1995.
The need for oxygenates, such as methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE), will send demand for iso-olefins (oxygenate precursors) soaring. Rather than build plants to generate these feedstocks, refiners may be able to meet their iso-olefin needs, at least in part, by increasing the yield of these materials from their fluid catalytic cracking units (FCCUs). The FCCU is a key process unit of the refinery system. It uses catalysts to "crack" heavy crude oil fractions into gasoline and other refining products, including iso-olefins.
However, the potential to increase the iso-olefin yield with current catalysts was limited until the introduction of Engelhard's new catalysts.
IsoPlus 1000 catalysts increase isobutylene (the iso-olefin used in MTBE manufacture) by about 70 percent when compared with current, commercial FCC catalysts in company tests. They will help refiners meet the surge in oxygenate demand expected beginning this summer and fall as the November 1992 deadline pushes oxygenates and isobutylene into short supply.
IsoPlus 2000 catalysts can more than double, and, in some cases, can triple, yields of isobutylene and other iso-olefins from FCCUs. IsoPlus 2000 catalysts will help refiners in 1995 and beyond when as much as 800,000 barrels per day (BPD) of isobutylene may be needed for reformulated gasoline. FCCUs currently make less than 150,000 BPD. Use of IsoPlus 2000 catalysts may be able to cut in half the investment capital, estimated to exceed $5 billion, required to add sufficient isobutylene capacity.
"IsoPlus 1000 and 2000 catalysts are the first commercial products in a new generation of high-performance catalysts that will offer refiners a way to minimize MTBE costs," said William R. Gustafson, vice president, Petroleum Catalysts Group.
"Engelhard is continuing to develop the technology on which these catalysts are based to provide even higher yields of important reformulated gasoline components," he said.
