ENGELHARD AND PROCATALYSE SIGN AN AGREEMENT CALLING FOR GLOBAL COOPERATION ON CATALYSTS FOR THE OIL INDUSTRY

PARIS, Nov. 18 ~PRNewswire~ -- Engelhard Corporation (NYSE: EC) and Procatalyse, the French-based joint subsidiary of Rhone-Poulenc and of Isis, which is itself a subsidiary of the Institut Francais du Petrole (IFP), have signed an agreement on catalysts for the hydroprocessing segment of the oil industry.
The two companies will combine their highly complementary catalyst lines and cooperate in the marketing, sale and service of the single product line worldwide.
In North America, the two companies have formed a 50~50 joint venture firm, called Acreon Catalysts, which will serve the $300 million market for hydroprocessing catalysts in the United States, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean. Acreon will be headquartered in Houston, and will begin operations in January 1993.
Procatalyse has the exclusive right to market and sell the full product line outside of North America, also a $300 million market. Engelhard will be assisting Procatalyse's efforts through its worldwide sales force.
The cooperation will enable both partners to strengthen their positions in the world market for hydroprocessing catalysts. The agreement will give Procatalyse the presence it had been seeking in the United States, the No. 1 market for oil industry catalysts, and will allow Engelhard to broaden its marketing scope outside of North America.
For customers, the synergy created by combining Engelhard and Procatalyse technology and geographical strengths will mean a broader choice in products and better service.
In 1991, Procatalyse sold about FF 400 million worth of catalysts and adsorbents for the oil industry, of which more than 85 percent was exported. Procatalyse, which is headquartered in the Paris suburb of Rueil-Malmaison, operates industrial facilities at the Rhone-Poulenc plant in Salindres, in south central France. It draws upon the extensive research potential of both the IFP and Rhone-Poulenc.
Engelhard Corporation is a leading supplier of fluid catalytic cracking catalysts and additives to the petroleum industry. The company also is a world-leading provider of specialty chemical products, engineered materials and precious metal management services.
