ENERGY RESEARCH CORPORATION AWARDED COAL-GAS POLISHING CONTRACT

DANBURY, Conn., June 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Energy Research Corporation (ERC) (NASDAQ: ERCC; BSE: ERC) has been awarded a $500,000 contract from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for continuing research into ERC's new method of "hot-polishing" for total contaminant removal from gas generated by the gasification of coal, it was announced today.
This Phase II contract, funded 100 percent through DOE's Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) program, supports ERC activities directed at eliminating pollutants from exhaust stack emissions of future fuel cell and conventional electric power plants. Over half the electricity in the United States is generated by coal-fired power plants. If proven, this process could provide the electric utility industry with an inexpensive method of hot-polishing coal-derived fuel gas. Advantages of such a technology would include contaminant protection of power generating equipment and a cleaner environment.
Dr. A. Pigeaud, materials scientist at ERC, stated: "The research done under this contract will provide important data on the utilization of coal-gas as a fuel in ERC's fuel cells and other power generating equipment such as integrated gasifier combined cycle (IGCC) units. It is an integral part of ERC's ongoing effort to provide the cleanest electric power from a variety of fossil fuels." Fuel cells are electrochemical power generators that produce electricity more cleanly and efficiently than traditional combustion methods.
Energy Research Corporation, located in Danbury and Torrington, Conn., is engaged in the commercialization of highly efficient and environmentally benign electric power generation equipment for utilities using its Direct Fuel Cell technology, and in the development of Phosphoric Acid fuel cells and advanced storage batteries.
