ENERGY RESEARCH CORPORATION ANNOUNCES MTU DIVISION OF DEUTSCHE AEROSPACE TO LEAD EUROPEAN FUEL CELL COMMERCIALIZATION EFFORT

DANBURY, Conn., Aug. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Energy Research Corporation (NASDAQ: ERCC; BSE: ERC) announced that their European Direct Fuel Cell program will now be the responsibility of Motoren und Turbinen Union (MTU) Friedrichshafen GmbH. MTU is a division of ERC's European licensee Deutsche Aerospace AG (DASA), a subsidiary of Daimler Benz AG. DASA announced this move from its Space Transport and Propulsion Systems division on July 21, 1993.
MTU is a leading supplier of packaged electrical generation systems in the 40 kilowatt to five megawatt size range. These are produced for high technology users including telecommunication and computer centers, high-rise offices, automated manufacturing plants and the offshore sector.
Dr. Bernard S. Baker, president and CEO of Energy Research Corporation commented, "We feel this move at DASA is beneficial to our commercialization effort. MTU is a leading supplier of modular electrical generation systems. Their expertise in this area will be useful as we continue to develop a market-ready Direct Fuel Cell power plant. In turn, MTU believes our fuel cell will allow it to extend its position into the decentralized energy technology market."
ERC has been working with DASA since 1990 on the development of Direct Fuel Cells for the European market. In 1992, ERC announced the formation of a European consortium led by DASA. Other members include RWE AG (Germany), Ruhrgas AG (Germany), Elkraft A.m.b.A. (Denmark) and Haldor Topsoe A/S (Denmark).
Direct Fuel cells generate electricity by means of efficient, environmentally benign electrochemical processes, using fuels such as natural gas and coal-gas. Energy Research Corporation, located in Danbury and Torrington, Conn., is engaged in the commercialization of utility-scale Direct Fuel Cell power plants, and in the development of advanced storage batteries.
