ENERGY GROUP TO PRESENT RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT AWARD TO S&S ALTERNATIVE FUEL CONVERSION WORK

HOUSTON, May 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Stewart & Stevenson Services, Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: SSSS) will be presented the Research and Development Award by The National Energy Resources Organization during the group's annual awards banquet in Washington D.C. on Wednesday evening, May 5.
Stewart & Stevenson will receive the award for its leadership in the development and commercialization of alternative fuel vehicle conversion products for an entire range of vehicles, including automobiles, light trucks, heavy-duty trucks, intercity buses and municipal transit buses. Stewart & Stevenson's development of the "Gaseous Fuel Injection System" was cited in the award.
The award is being presented to Bob O'Neal, president and CEO of Stewart & Stevenson, by Senator Conrad Burns (Montana), master of ceremonies at the award banquet, being held at The Mayflower Hotel. NERO is a non-profit association formed in 1975 to bring together individuals and groups actively engaged in fostering national energy activities.
The NERO award citation states that with the "Gaseous Fuel Injection System," Stewart & Stevenson has developed the first solid state electronically-controlled gaseous fuel injection system. The GFI is more than 50 percent smaller than any other existing mechanical system and meets or exceeds current emissions standards.
The award goes on to say that the Stewart & Stevenson system was the first to be certified by the California Air Resources Board for all 1993 and older passenger cars, light-duty and medium-duty trucks as well as all heavy-duty engine classifications. Stewart & Stevenson, with its leadership in the marketing of conversion technologies, will help the nation achieve greater energy security and environmental protection, the award states.
NERO, headquartered in Washington D.C., annually recognizes achievements in several categories.
Houston-based Stewart & Stevenson provides engineered power systems for the transportation, power generation, defense, aviation, marine, construction and petroleum industries.
