ENERGY BIOSYSTEMS CORPORATION AND PETROLITE CORPORATION ANNOUNCE EXTENDED AGREEMENT

THE WOODLANDS, Texas, Oct. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Energy BioSystems Corporation (NASDAQ: ENBC) and Petrolite Corporation (NASDAQ: PLIT) today announced their agreement for an expanded alliance covering all territories worldwide for the commercialization and service of Energy BioSystems' proprietary biocatalytic desulfurization (BDS) technology. Under the terms of the agreement, Petrolite will provide development resources, unit engineering and ongoing customer service for BDS units worldwide in return for participation in the gross profits of BDS unit sales. This agreement expands the territory of an earlier alliance and sets the primary Petrolite participation rate at 22 percent of worldwide gross profits from BDS unit sales and fees. In return for the expansion of the territory covered by the alliance, EBC's primary participation rate was increased from 70 percent of worldwide gross profits to 78 percent of worldwide gross profits.
Jay Titone, group vice president of Chemicals for Petrolite, said, "We are encouraged by the progress made toward commercialization in just the last 18 months. Oil industry customers are interested in the process because desulfurization is one of the most critical issues they face this decade. We believe BDS can play a major role in helping the industry respond to the problem in an efficient manner."
"The technology is significantly more advanced than just a year ago. Our alliance with Petrolite has been a key factor in our development and marketing efforts for biocatalytic desulfurization to date," stated John H. Webb, president and CEO of Energy BioSystems. "This agreement to extend the territory reflects the continuing progress and promise of our business relationship with Petrolite. We look forward to working closely with Petrolite on a worldwide basis to deliver BDS to the oil industry as rapidly as possible."
Energy BioSystems is commercializing biotechnology-based processes for the refining and oil production industries. The company's focus to date has been on developing biocatalytic desulfurization, a proprietary process involving the use of bacteria to remove sulfur from a range of fossil fuels. This process is expected to help refiners worldwide meet environmental regulations in a more cost effective manner and has the potential to greatly improve the marketability of high-sulfur oil reserves.
