END TO TERMINAL ACOMIC WASTE BURIAL.
The "out of sight, out of mind" approach to atomic waste management appears it could be coming to an end. When exactly it comes to end remains open. Mr. Stefan Furlister of Greenpeace Zurich illustrated guarded optimism saying that although "the concept could be viewed to a degree as exemplary, it is still only a concept. There is still a lot of research that needs to be done." For years there has been talk of radioactive waste management of this kind but nothing has ever come of it. However, in the wake of recent scandals involving the export of atomic waste to foreign countries, for instance the failed attempt to export waste to Russia, the concept of a safer method of waste management is refreshing.
Environmentalists of course would like to see a halt of the use of atomic energy entirely. Nevertheless, the realisation of this project, should it be approved by Swiss federal authorities as well as the residents of Nidwalden, would be a welcome consolation There is also hope that the project in Switzerland would set an example within the branch of waste management and trigger similar projects in other countries.
