EMPI, INC. ANNOUNCES MANAGEMENT CHANGES

ST. PAUL, Minn., Jan. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Empi, Inc. (NASDAQ: EMPI), a medical device manufacturer, announced today that Michael F. Connoy has resigned as president and chief operating officer, effective Feb. 1.
Donald D. Maurer, Empi chairman and chief executive officer, will assume the presidency for the foreseeable future. He stated: "On behalf of all Empi employees, I want to thank Mike for the important contributions he has made to Empi over the past four and a half years, and to wish him well."
Connoy is joining a young, Twin Cities-based, non-competing medical company, as president and chief executive officer.
Maurer also said that John A. Shipley has been promoted to executive vice president of sales and marketing. He will continue to manage all sales and marketing operations. Said Maurer: "John has been the key person in building our distribution network geographically, in strengthening and motivating the sales force, and in generating Empi's sales momentum. He also has been instrumental in Empi's acquisition and integration of Medtronic, Inc.'s Nortech business."
Continued Maurer, "Empi's management team has grown and matured the past few years, now comprising myself and two executive vice presidents, as well as our treasurer. Further, we have initiated a search for a vice president of manufacturing, who will oversee our operations in Clear Lake, S.D. This is a new position for Empi."
Empi expects to report a record year for 1992. Through the first nine months of 1992, Empi's sales increased to $21.6 million, up 41 percent from $15.3 million for the first three quarters of 1991. Net income for the first nine months of 1992 totaled $2.6 million, or $.62 per share, up from $1.3 million, or $.39 per share, for the same period in 1991.
Empi develops, manufactures and distributes non-invasive biomedical devices and accessories for electro-therapeutic applications in physical medicine, orthopedic, rehabilitation and neurology markets. The company's shares are traded on the NASDAQ national market system under the symbol EMPI.
