EMPI, INC. HIRES VICE PRESIDENT OF MANUFACTURING

ST. PAUL, Minn., March 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Empi, Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: EMPI), a medical device manufacturer, announced today that Rob Clapp has joined the company in a newly created position, vice president of manufacturing.
Clapp, 43, is a member of Empi's senior management team. He will participate in strategic planning and will direct all manufacturing and related operations for Empi.
Clapp joined Empi after five years as vice president of manufacturing for Dacomed Corporation of Bloomington, Minn., a manufacturer of implantable prosthesis and electro-mechanical diagnostic products.
Donald D. Maurer, Empi president and chief executive officer, said: "Rob Clapp has the engineering and manufacturing management experience, knowledge and strategic planning skills that we need for the next phases of Empi's growth. Working in partnership with sales and marketing, R&D and finance, he will help us increase our responsiveness to customers worldwide."
Maurer continued: "Following our acquisition of Medtronic's Nortech division in November 1992, Empi is a much larger company. We are making more of our own electrodes and other products, adopting ISO 9000 international standards, and continually refining our processes to maximize efficiency and quality in manufacturing our expanding product lines."
While with Dacomed, Clapp instituted new systems for design, reliability testing, manufacturing and quality assurance which contributed to increased profitability. Previously, he served as director of engineering and then as manager of operations for Bloomington-based Xerxes Corporation. He also held engineering jobs with Medtronic Inc., Control Data Corporation and AMF Paragon Electric.
Clapp received his bachelor's degree in industrial technology from the University of Wisconsin in 1972, and earned an MBA in finance from the University of Minnesota in 1980.
Empi develops, manufactures and distributes non-invasive biomedical devices and accessories for electro-therapeutic applications in physical medicine, orthopedic, rehabilitation, urogynecology and neurology markets. The company's shares are traded on the NASDAQ national market system under the symbol EMPI.
