EMERY WORLDWIDE WINS U.S. POSTAL SERVICE CONTRACT FOR AIR TRANSPORTATION OF CHRISTMAS MAIL

PALO ALTO, Calif., Nov. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Emery Worldwide has been awarded a contract from the U.S. Postal Service to operate a dedicated jet freighter network to help transport the annual surge of holiday mail during the Christmas season.
Known as a "C-NET" contract, the award calls for Emery to put into service a fleet of 21 aircraft serving 22 cities, with capacity to handle nearly 1.4 million pounds of mail daily. The contract was awarded to Emery following a competitive procurement evaluation process.
"We are pleased that the Postal Service has selected Emery Worldwide for this important contract," said W. Roger Curry, president and chief executive officer of the company. "This award recognizes Emery's superior performance and competitive service, and provides excellent transportation value for postal patrons."
In this C-NET operation, the 21 Emery planes will depart from outlying locations in the morning and converge each afternoon at the USPS Eagle hub in Indianapolis. Once there, mail cargo containers will be downloaded, processed and reloaded into aircraft during an approximate three-hour time window. Aircraft will then depart Indianapolis in the afternoon on return trips to destination cities.
Aircraft deployed for Emery's C-NET operation will be drawn principally from Emery's dedicated North American fleet of DC-8 jet freighters.
In addition to the C-NET contract, Emery also was awarded a follow- on assignment by the Postal Service to fly five Boeing 727 and one DC-8 freighter aircraft during the day between six U.S. cities and Indianapolis. These aircraft, which normally fly at night in the USPS's Eagle network moving Express and Priority Mail, will be assigned during the day to transport anticipated holiday mail volumes to and from the six cities in a coordinated operation with the dedicated C-NET fleet.
Earlier this year, Emery was selected by the USPS for a 10-year, $880 million contract to provide air transportation services for the USPS's Eagle network handling Express and Priority Mail. Emery has been the air operations contractor for the Eagle network since 1989.
Both Christmas mail contract assignments begin Dec. 11 and conclude on Christmas Eve. Other contract terms were not disclosed.
Cities being served by Emery under its Christmas mail transportation assignments include Baltimore; Detroit; Anchorage, Alaska; Atlanta; Boston; Denver; Washington (Dulles); Houston; Kansas City, Mo.; Dallas/Fort Worth; Los Angeles; Portland, Ore.; Philadelphia; Phoenix, Ariz.; Salt Lake City; Syracuse, N.Y.; San Diego; Seattle; Tampa, Fla.; Pittsburgh; New York City; Hartford, Conn.; Jacksonville, Fla.; Greensboro, N.C.; Minneapolis/St. Paul; and Oakland, Calif.
Emery Worldwide is a $1.1 billion air freight company with 281 terminal and service locations in North America and 88 countries. Emery provides professional transportation services to support the time- definite traffic and logistics needs of retailing, manufacturing and industrial customers. The Emery network accepts any size commercial freight shipment.
