EMERY WORLDWIDE EXPANDS AM DELIVERY SERVICE FOR COMMERCIAL AIR FREIGHT SHIPMENTS

EMERY WORLDWIDE EXPANDS AM DELIVERY SERVICE
 FOR COMMERCIAL AIR FREIGHT SHIPMENTS
PALO ALTO, Calif., April 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Emery Worldwide today announced it has expanded its premium next-morning service for air freight shipments in 26 major U.S. metropolitan regions, adding nearly 600 points to its before-noon delivery schedules in these areas.
This service upgrade, which increases Emery's next-morning coverage in these regions by 46 percent, was implemented following a three-month study of shipper requirements and the company's freight flow patterns, said W. Roger Curry, president and chief executive officer of the company.
"This is another important step by Emery to refine our systems and services in response to what our customers are telling us," noted Curry. "It allows us to improve utilization in our air and ground resources, match our networks closer to what our customers want, and gain efficiencies that benefit both of us."
According to David I. Beatson, Emery's vice president of sales and marketing, the service upgrades extend the radius for before-noon delivery, which was already available, to a wider area in each metropolitan region. The upgrades are being accomplished principally by revising routes and schedules, and re-positioning existing assets in Emery's North American ground network.
He added that the company also is adjusting resources to more closely target Emery's principal traffic profile -- commercial parcels and packages from business-to-business customers in the 10-70 pound range, as well as heavy freight shipments above 70 pounds, and non- standard size cargo.
The 26 metropolitan areas in the service upgrade program are Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, Dallas/Fort Worth, Denver, Detroit, Ft. Lauderdale, Kansas City, Mo., Los Angeles, New Orleans, New York, Oklahoma City, Orlando, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Portland, Ore., Richmond and Roanoke, Va., Salt Lake City, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, St. Louis, Syracuse, N.Y., and Wichita, Kan.
"Since the numbers of envelope-only stops have been greatly reduced, we've been able to re-deploy our drivers into those service-sensitive areas, and for those types of air freight shipments, that our customers find essential to their businesses," Beatson noted.
"They are increasingly finding Emery to be a reliable air freight service -- whether it's a 10-pound manufacturing component or a 2,000- pound mainframe computer -- that is flexible in meeting their manufacturing, distribution or logistics supply requirements," he added.
Many of the system adjustments grew out of "shippers advisory board" meetings that Emery management is conducting with customers, Beatson explained. The regular meetings, each time with different groups of customers, provide a forum for customer input on a wide variety of issues as well as to solicit feedback on current services and performance, and proposed changes.
The service upgrades will be reflected in Emery's new service guide, which is currently being published and will be distributed to customers by the end of the month.
In addition to next-morning before-noon delivery service, Emery provides next day by 5 p.m. and second-day delivery. The company also provides expedited same-day delivery, and has a complete range of international services.
Emery Worldwide is a $1.3 billion air freight company with 245 terminal and service locations in North America and 88 countries. Emery provides professional transportation services to support the expedited traffic and logistics needs of retailing, manufacturing and industrial customers. The Emery network accepts any size commercial heavy freight shipment.
