EMERY WORLDWIDE AWARDED CONTRACT FROM GENERAL MOTORS
 AS PRIMARY AIR FREIGHT CARRIER
PALO ALTO, Calif., Sept. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Emery Worldwide has been selected by General Motors Corp. (NYSE: GM) as the auto manufacturer's primary air freight carrier for its North American manufacturing operations.
Emery won the two-year contract in a competitive bidding process for GM's commercial air freight business.
"We are very proud that GM has shown its confidence in Emery Worldwide with this substantial contract," said W. Roger Curry, Emery's president and chief executive officer. "We look forward to working together to provide transportation solutions that support GM's product quality and customer satisfaction goals."
The contract calls for Emery to provide door-to-door movement of air freight shipments between GM's suppliers and manufacturing plants, as well as inter-plant moves between GM facilities in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Emery expects to start servicing GM plant locations beginning later this month. The contract calls for full implementation by January 1993. Financial terms of the contract were not disclosed.
"GM conducted the most thorough and extensive operational and financial review we have ever encountered," Curry noted. "They require a proactive proposal to a very challenging logistical environment. We responded with solutions emphasizing flexibility, innovation, cost- efficiency and a comprehensive approach to quality and service consistency."
Curry cited as key factors in the award Emery's extensive terminal network, ground fleet and dedicated aircraft resources; its technology expertise, particularly electronic data interchange capabilities; and its success in designing an air freight service program tailored for the needs of individual GM plants, while also providing substantial overall cost and service advantages.
Emery Worldwide is the $1.3 billion air freight subsidiary of Consolidated Freightways Inc. (NYSE: COF). Emery provides professional transportation services to support the expedited traffic and logistics needs of retailing, manufacturing and industrial customers. The Emery network accepts any size commercial parcel, package or freight shipment.
