EMERY WORLDWIDE AND SPAIN'S RENFE NATIONAL RAILWAY SIGN JOINT SERVICE AGREEMENT

PALO ALTO, Calif., June 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Emery Worldwide, the global air freight company, has signed a three-year agreement with Renfe, the state-owned Spanish national railway company, to provide a joint service for international shipments to and from Spain.
Under the agreement, the Renfe Parcel Business Unit will use the Emery international network for delivery of parcel shipments anywhere in the world in a maximum of 72 hours. Emery will employ the extensive infrastructure of Renfe for deliveries of shipments within the Iberian peninsula.
This collaboration is believed to be the first of its kind between a global air carrier and a European state-run rail system, noted W. Roger Curry, president and chief executive officer of Emery.
The agreement, which calls for the concentration and distribution of Emery's domestic deliveries in Spain through the Renfe Business Unit, will serve to significantly extend Emery's coverage and delivery capabilities in Spain, enabling faster, more reliable service to this European community market. At the same time, it extends Emery's service to a potentially vast new client base. Emery currently operates air freight terminals in Madrid and Barcelona.
Through the resources of Emery, Renfe customers will benefit from a newly created international service. Using Emery's integrated air transportation network outside of Spain and its wide range of door-to- door international express service and airport-to-airport air freight services (for either single or consolidated shipments), the Renfe Parcel Business Unit is now able to offer its customers variable delivery times ranging from 24 hours anywhere in Europe, to 48 hours for the United State and Canada, and 72 hours for the Far East.
"The agreement is very positive for Renfe given that our clients increasingly demand an integral service and prefer 'one-stop shopping.' Through this agreement with Emery, we can now handle all of their transportation needs, both domestic and international," said Jose Antonio Castro, commercial director of the Renfe Parcel Business Unit.
Renfe plans to manage and track freight deliveries by linking its national network SIPDEX control system with Emery's EMCON worldwide telecommunications and computerized shipment control system.
As part of the agreement, Renfe sales personnel will also undergo a three-day training course given by Emery's commercial staff to familiarize them with air freight marketing and operations. A total of 60 sales-related personnel will attend the course, which will cover areas including products offered, marketing methods, document preparation and handling, terms and conditions and rate schedules.
"Emery is committed to the success of this mutually beneficial venture," said Jules J. Schnyder, Emery's vice president-Europe. "This agreement is believed to be the first of its kind between primarily an air freight transportation company and a state-run European railway network. It heralds a new concept for Emery, one that we certainly would seek to explore in other European countries."
Emery Worldwide is a $1.1-billion air freight company with 276 terminal and service locations in North America and 88 countries. Emery provides professional transportation services to support the expedited traffic and logistics needs of retailing, manufacturing and industrial customers. The Emery network accepts any size commercial parcel, package or heavy freight shipment.
