EMERY EXPANDS WAREHOUSE INVENTORY EXPRESS SYSTEM,
ADDS REGIONAL, LOCAL DEPOTS; NAMES W.I.S.E. DIRECTOR
PALO ALTO, Calif., April 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Emery Worldwide announced today an expansion of its Warehouse Inventory System Express (WISE) depot program to provide customers with three levels of service for time-critical shipments, including a new two-hour turnaround service for immediate delivery needs.
Under the expanded program, Emery's three levels of WISE services will include: expedited overnight delivery from its WISE facility at the company's Dayton, Ohio hub; a six-to-ten hour order-to-delivery turnaround from "regional" centers strategically located at commercial airline hubs; and the new two-hour service from "local" depot operations at key North American city terminals./
Each WISE depot provides customized inventory management and expedited delivery programs for high-value or time-sensitive goods, according to W. Roger Curry, president and chief executive officer.
"These programs provide an immediate response capability that allows Emery customers to react instantaneously to the needs of their markets," Curry noted. "This expansion reinforces our commitment to better, more comprehensive services that help our customers manage their logistics needs more efficiently."
Emery established its WISE operations in 1987 in response to shipper desires for more specialized logistics management services. Today, such customized logistics programs that go beyond the simple transportation of freight have become a crucial capability for carriers to support just-in-time and quick response production and distribution cycles, Curry noted.
Curry also announced that Tim Deters, a ten-year veteran of the air freight business, has been appointed director of the WISE program.
Deters was international manager at Emery's terminal in Cincinnati, where he will continue to be based in his new position. He reports to David I. Beatson, vice president-sales and marketing for the company.
Beatson explained that Emery is establishing regional and local warehouse distribution depots nationwide to meet the needs of customers who are operating with extremely short inventory turnaround or product cycle times, and do not have the investment for or do not wish to invest capital into additional warehousing facilities.
Emery's existing WISE system in Dayton emphasizes central warehousing in a controlled environment with immediate access to high- priority air and ground transportation for fast delivery to any customer point. It operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, providing manufacturers with quick-response shipping to support urgent-inventory, customer-fulfillment or plant-operations demands.
"We will continue to utilize our central WISE facility in Dayton for expedited overnight delivery," Beatson said. "We have now regionalized and localized this concept.
"From these new sites, we will manage customer inventory and provide immediate shipment on a regional or local basis, with our fastest service meeting a two-hour turnaround or less from order to delivery," Beatson explained.
In addition, when necessary, he said Emery will secure facilities close to its terminals to meet a customer's additional warehousing needs if requested by the customer.
Principal users will include automotive, aerospace, utility and medical equipment industries as well as any manufacturer who is isolated from customers by distance and must deliver inventory within a next-day, same-day or two-hour or less time window, Beatson projected.
Deters has been employed in the air cargo profession since 1982, serving with Emery Air Freight and CF AirFreight in various sales specialty positions. A native of Cincinnati, he earned a bachelor's degree in administrative management from the University of Cincinnati in 1986.
