EMERGENCY DONATION OF PFIZER PRODUCTS DISTRIBUTED
 TO VICTIMS OF HURRICANE ANDREW
NEW YORK, Sept. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Pfizer Inc. (NYSE: PFE) said today that an emergency shipment of pharmaceuticals, including antibiotics, antidepressants, heart and diabetes drugs, has been sent to victims of Hurricane Andrew in South Florida.
Red Cross officials and local Pfizer district managers received the truckload of medicines at a Relief Center in South Florida Fairgrounds, West Palm Beach. The emergency supplies were then delivered personally by Pfizer district managers and sales representatives to hospitals, pharmacies, physicians and military MASH units operating in the disaster area.
"We believe these direct deliveries are the fastest way possible to get the needed medicinals, in the right amounts and dosage forms, into the hands of the people who need them," said Edward C. Bessey, president of Pfizer's U.S. Pharmaceuticals Group. "In an emergency like this, it is important to use the most direct methods, even if its means going outside the normal distribution network."
Bessey said the company is investigating the need for further shipments.
Products in the initial truckload were elected after Pfizer had contacted physicians, pharmacists, military and Red Cross units operating in the stricken area and surveyed their most critical needs.
Included were Zithromax, an antibiotic; Procardia XL, a heart drug; Diflican, an antifungal agent; Feldene, an antiarthritic; and Zoloft, and antidepressant. Also distributed were over-the-counter items including Plax toothbrushes, Visine eye drops, Ben-Gay ointment and RID shampoo, a lice remedy.
Pfizer Inc. is a research-based, diversified health care company with global operations. The company reported sales of approximately $6.95 billion for 1991.
