After starring in Brazil's first-ever fright flick in 1963, actor Jos Mojica Marins - better known as Coffin Joe - returns for a fresh attempt to make us lose our lunch with this acutely unpleasant trash horror.

Cheap, bloody and determined to shock, the film's got a certain something, although you'll need a strong stomach to make it through to the gory climax.

Set in S...o Paulo, we first meet our 'hero' being released from prison after a 40-year stretch for murder. Renowned as Brazil's sickest psycho, Coffin Joe resembles a cross between the Marquis De Sade, Charles Manson and Nosferatu.

With talon-like fingernails, a hypnotic stare and an utter disregard for morality, it's not long before his disciples are hacking and slashing their way through the favelas in search of a woman Joe can impregnate and thus safeguard his bloodline.

And the gore is laid on thick as Joe's - mostly nude - victims are skinned alive, crucified, forced to eat their own body parts or have rats inserted into intimate body cavities.

It's not exactly subtle, with long lingering close-ups of the carnage, but there's a black humour at work that prevents things becoming unwatchable.

A horror with a sense of its own absurdity, it's a cult classic in the making.
